Trained and qualified All Graduates' Greek Interpreter

As a child Voula Tomaras enjoyed attending Saturday morning Greek language classes in Melbourne.  As an adult, she interpreted for her family and friends.  It didn't come as a surprise to them then when she chose to build on these early skills and became an All Graduates’ Professional Interpreter in early 2010.

Voula’s professional language career began teaching Greek at a private language school.  A role she enjoyed, it involved teaching school aged children. She instilled in them the same desire to aim for accuracy and excellence that she applies to her own interpreting career.

By the time Voula committed to study of the Advanced Diploma of Interpreting at Melbourne’s RMIT University, she was confident of her bilingual skills and achieved the Professional level of interpreting accreditation in Greek.

The two year-long, part-time course developed her ability to interpret in a professional capacity. “It’s a different ball game,” says Voula of the transition from interpreting for family and friends to the professional environment. “You’re accountable now.”

The course work included sitting the Australian national standard of Professional interpreter accreditation from the National Accreditation Authority of Translators and Interpreters (NAATI).

The accreditation examination included the testing of dialogue interpreting and ethics, and an examination of the candidate’s understanding of the social and cultural factors affecting the environments interpreting may take place.

Voula’s professionalism becomes especially critical when she works for All Graduates’ clients such as surgeons, tribunals and courts.  An incorrect relay of information for either the Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) person or the client can have a life-threatening impact.

Adding to her qualification is the ongoing professional development that Voula undertakes to ensure she remains current.

Voula’s passion for interpreting excellence is evident as she provides support to the interpreting lecturers at RMIT during student role plays and discourse subjects. She will be in attendance during student exams.

Proactive in her career development, Voula reviews resources provided by the language service agencies she works with, to ensure clients benefit from the most accurate client and industry specific terminology. Additionally, she reads novels, newspapers in Greek and listens to local Greek radio to exercise her aural and reading skills.
